Explosion protection for silos
Silos are a critical focal point when we speak of Explosion Protection. A number of different potential ignition sources increase the risk of an explosion. Consider the following: hot surfaces, electrical equipment, static electricity build up and discharge, spark emission through metallic foreign bodies during pneumatic filling, or even through pure self-ignition of the product.
If all potential combustion sources cannot be excluded, silos must be protected. Use explosion venting such as EGV explosion vents to protect silos located outside; flameless venting via Q-Box / Q-Rohr®® or explosion suppression (Q-Bic™) for indoor silos.
For food or pharmaceutical processing, we suggest the quench valve hygienic version to take care of your isolation requirements. To relieve pressure in hygienically demanding processes, the EHEDG certified EGV HYP explosion vent and the Q-Rohr® in combination with the ERO hygienic explosion vent are available.
Depending on the type of material you are processing, preventive measures can also be implemented. For example, spark detectors in combination with quench valves or chemical suppression can be used as a safety measure that can prevent the introduction of ignition sources into silos. However, using this methodology instead of explosion protection must be evaluated case by case – our experts can assist you with this evaluation.

The protection of individual system components is only as good as the protection of the entire system. To insure you have a safe and economical Explosion Protection plan, your total system must be examined and protected.
Pay particular attention that there are sufficient isolation devices. Also, guard against “over engineering”.
