Explosion Protection for mills and grinding systems
Most mill systems have parts with metal-to-metal contact points at high velocities- a high probability scenario for the creation of potential ignition sources.
When you think about the prerequisites for a dust explosion, a mill offers all the necessary components: Dust, confinement, effective combustion sources and oxygen. Therefore, several mill manufacturers offer equipment with an explosion pressure resistant design (up to 10 bar). This option may not always be the most economic one and consider this: even in the case of a pressure-resistant construction, design-based explosion protection continues to be a requirement which means that isolation is still necessary to protect downstream system components.
The intake opening of the mill should also be considered. Should an explosion occur, flames and pressure can escape, so the REMBE® Q-Rohr® LF or Q-Box LF is recommended here: This type of protection allows air to be sucked in during normal operation, but, in the event of an explosion, the environment is protected from the harmful effects.
The overall picture counts:
The protection of individual system components is only as good as the protection of the entire system. To insure you have a safe and economical Explosion Protection plan, your total system must be examined and protected.
Pay particular attention that there are sufficient isolation devices. Also, guard against “over engineering”.
