Explosion Protection for elevators
At the same time, elevators represent a special source of danger for an explosion because they facilitate the negative prerequisites ("explosive mixture" and "ignition sources") through their function and design. Additionally, pressure waves and flames could propagate across several floors through unprotected elevators, and cause severe damages there.
Reason enough to devote a great deal of attention to these system components! For decades, the REMBE® engineers have focused on the design of protection concepts for elevators, always taking into account the VDI Guidelines 2263, page 8 (8.1 and 8.2) or NFPA 68 and 61.
Based on the requirements of the VDI guidelines, REMBE® has developed a holistic protection system for elevators: ElevatorEX, the only safety system for elevators with EC type-examination in the world.
ElevatorEX will provide a perfect solution for all types of elevators: Maintenance-free relief devices such as the Q-Box or explosion vents are installed at critical system parts such as the elevator base and head. The elevator shafts are protected by extinguishing bottles which are controlled by spark detectors. The system is suitable for the initial outfitting as well as the retrofitting of existing elevators.

Further preventive, protective measures, such as the limitation of the dust concentration through suction devices, should be considered in any case. However, this applies to all system parts, and not just to elevators.
The overall picture counts:
The protection of individual system components is only as good as the protection of the entire system. Pay particular attention to having sufficient decoupling devices, and the protection against “over engineering”. Only if the entire system is observed, and the individual protective measures are aligned to each other, will your Explosion Protection concept be safe AND economic.
